First held in 1960, UEFA Euro is a major soccer championship that happens every four years. It’s one of the most-watched sporting events globally, with a growing fan base in Canada.

Italy are the defending Euro 2020 champions, having defeated England 3-2 after a nail-biting penalty shootout in 2021 (the event was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic).

Euro 2024 will be hosted in Germany from 14 June to 14 July – with 51 matches played to decide the champions of Europe for the next four years.

Euro 2024 qualifying started in March 2023 with 53 teams competing for 23 spots (Germany automatically qualify as hosts). Teams are split into 10 groups, playing each other twice, home and away.

The top two teams from each group advance, filling 20 spots. The remaining three spots are determined through a play-off tournament featuring 12 teams, based on their 2022-23 UEFA Nations League results.

Euro 2024 teams and groups

In March, the 24 teams competing in Euro 2024 were finalized. Groups B and D might be considered the toughest groups to qualify from, with two previous UEFA Euro winners competing in each.

• Group C – Slovenia, Denmark, Serbia, England
• Group D – Poland, Netherlands, Austria, France

After qualifying, Euro 2024 is a round-robin style tournament comprising six groups of four teams. The top two teams from each group and the four best third-placed teams advance to the knockout stages.

The winner of Group A plays the winner of Group B, and so on. If necessary, extra-time and penalties will determine which teams qualify to the quarters, semis, and the much-anticipated Euro 2024 final.
